10/21/2009: Hybrid Static Test

Last Saturday we did a static test with another hybrid grain. This one was made from a 2"x12" PVC pipe nipple with threaded end caps. The fuel was candle wax.

I'm happy to say the catalyst ignition system is completely confirmed. The video shows a white peroxide cloud for 3 frames (100 ms) then the exhaust changes to a luminous plume with at least one mach diamond so ignition definitely occurred.

The rocket ran very rough with a machine-gun-like sound. The next one will need a more restricting orifice among other changes. The end cap that made up the nozzle also blew off less than one second into the firing. So we have a lot to learn, but are making progress.
